The New York Yankees are in the American League (AL) East division. They began play in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles, but are no relation to the current day Baltimore Orioles. In 1903, the franchise was purchased and relocated to New York as the New York Highlanders and renamed the New York Yankees in 1913.

Forbes lists the Yankees as the highest valued sports franchise in the United States and #2 in the world, with an estimated value of approximately $5 billion. The Yankees have won more titles than any other franchise in the four major North American sports leagues.

The most successful professional sports team in American History, they have won 19 American League East Division titles, 40 American League pennants, and 27 World Series championships. Fifty five Yankees players and Yankees managers have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, icons such as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford, Mariano Rivera, and Derek Jeter, with Rivera and Jeter having the two highest vote percentages of all Hall of Fame members.
