Origins and Evolution of The Peace Symbol

How did the peace symbol become an international sign for peace? Explore its origins in Britain's anti-nuclear movement, the artist behind the design, and the meanings associated with its familiar shape.

The origins of the peace symbol

Peasant before the Firing Squad by Francisco Goya

The now universally recognized Peace symbol had its genesis as a symbol of the anti-nuclear movement in the U.K. It eventually evolved to become an international sign for peace. Artist Gerald Holtom was assigned the duties of creating visual artistry for a planned anti nuke march as well as signs and banners. The Peace Symbol was one of the visuals he created. The symbol it is said was Inspired by The Third of May, aka Peasant before the Firing Squad by painter Francisco Goya. The painting commemorated Spanish resistance to Napoleon during French occupation of 1808. Goya depicted a peasant reaching above his head in a cross-like fashion, it provided a symbol of the atrocities of war. Holtom put a circle around the image and created the peace symbol.

Peace symbol meaning and semaphore

Some theories state that the Peace Symbol is derived from semaphore. The peace sign it is said, consists of two semaphore signs, N and a D for Nuclear Disarmament. Flag semaphore is a visual signaling system in which flags are held in various positions representing the alphabet. This system has been used in the maritime world since the 1800s.
