Roswell WTF

Alien New Mexico Highway

Roswell, New Mexico is infamously renowned by UFO fanatics instigated by a 1947 incident surrounding the crash of what the United States Army Air Force first claimed was a UFO and later a balloon. After debris was recovered by Roswell Army Air Field personnel,

The United States Army announced their possession of a "flying disc". The Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF) released the following statement :

“The many rumors regarding the flying disc became a reality yesterday when the intelligence office of the 509th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, Roswell Army Air Field, was fortunate enough to gain possession of a disc through the cooperation of one of the local ranchers and the sheriff's office of Chaves County.”

This announcement was retracted within the day, leaving the public scratching their heads as to what really happened.

A retired Air Force officer Jesse Marcel later claimed that the Army's weather balloon cover story was bogus. The Roswell Incident, published in 1980 became the catalyst for an expanding and complex series of UFO conspiracy theories, which over time evolved to include the governments concealing evidence of aliens, multiple crashed flying saucers, as well as reverse engineering of extraterrestrial craft.
