Alamogordo (Alamogordo means “fat cottonwood.” Gordo = fat; alamo = cottonwood) was founded in 1898. The El Paso and Northeastern Railroad, extended the railway to the tiny 2 horse town and from there it blossomed into a City.
In 1898 Alamogordo was actually two towns. Alamogordo was populated by Americans and its twin city Chihuahua was populated primarily by Mexicans. The two were merged in 1912 and became the incorporated city of Alamogordo, New Mexico. They celebrated their Centennial 9100 year anniversary in 2012.
