The story behind Alpine Ammonite
A sea creature in the high mountains. Geology has always had a taste for improbable arrangements.
Switzerland’s pale-blue 20-franc note from the sixth series of 1976 was first issued in 1979. It honored Horace-Bénédict de Saussure, the geologist and Alpine explorer. The reverse brought mountains, alpinists, and an ammonite into one small field of paper: ascent above, deep time within. Ammonites were marine animals; their fossils give the mountains a history older and stranger than the view from the summit.
The specimen at the chest keeps that Swiss denomination in sight. Across the back, a ribbed fossil spiral opens beneath the peaks, crossed by fine geometric arcs that recall the note’s security patterns. Slate, icy blue, and cream hold the composition in a cool, patient light. The mountain asks you to look up. The fossil asks you to look much further back.
