The Okzhetpes mountain art T-shirt brings Kazakhstan’s lake-country landscape and currency history into everyday wear. An adapted archival specimen at the left chest pairs with an original artistic interpretation across the back, printed on a relaxed-fit Comfort Colors 1717 cotton tee.

Why you'll love it

  • A landscape with a story: Inspired by Kazakhstan’s 1993 ten-tenge note, the design connects Mount Okzhetpes, Burabay, and scholar Shoqan Walikhanov.
  • Two distinct prints: A small chest specimen preserves the portrait and denomination, while the large back artwork opens onto stone, pines, blue-green water, and shoreline ornament.
  • Substantial everyday comfort: Garment-dyed, 6.1 oz, 100% ring-spun cotton with a relaxed unisex fit.

Choose your shirt: Black, White, Ivory, Pepper, Chambray, or Bay, in sizes S–4XL. Check the size chart for your preferred fit and the selectors for available combinations.

The story behind Okzhetpes

Some countries put their rulers on money. Kazakhstan put a man who studied the world on one side, and a place worth studying on the other.

The 1993 ten-tenge note belongs to Kazakhstan’s first national-currency series after independence. Its portrait is Shoqan Walikhanov—also rendered Chokan Valikhanov—a nineteenth-century scholar, historian, and ethnographer. Turn the note over and there is Mount Okzhetpes, rising in the lake country of Burabay. A human life on the face; a much older presence on the reverse. A considerable amount of country to fold into a pocket.

Our chest specimen keeps the portrait and denomination close. Across the back, the landscape has escaped its small paper enclosure: stone above the pines, blue-green water below, a long band of ornament following the shore. The greens come from the banknote; the invitation to linger belongs to the place.

This is what makes old currency such an agreeable rabbit hole. You arrive looking at a number. Before long, you are looking up a scholar, a mountain, and a lake you had never intended to visit.
